Brown Hoist Boiler Upgrade.

November 17, 2025

Our thanks go to Transport Heritage NSW for awarding us with grant funding to commence work on the Brown Hoist Boiler Works as this is a project to start in 2026. The Boiler and display history is that it was named after the late Arthur Moore former Operations manager who in the Societies early years was behind the building of this display. The display is powered by the Brown Hoist Boiler built by Industrial Brown Hoist Corporation Michigan USA in 1928 and was used as the Steam Power Source of the former AI&S No7 Steam Driven Rail Crane. Following the crane’s decommissioning, the boiler was donated to the ILRMS. The boiler powers an array of industrial steam engines. Due to necessary repairs, the boiler has been out of service at the ILRMS for the last few years and is scheduled for restoration in 2026.

The Illawarra Light Railway Museum again would like to thank Transport Heritage NSW for the grant funding received for the Brown Hoist Future Restoration Project.
